(Richmond, IN)--The number of babies born to addicted mothers at Reid Health is on pace to double this year. Listen to this statistic released Monday by Lisa Suttle and the group Heroin is Here. In the first five months of this year, 44 babies had been born to mothers who tested positive for some type of opioid. That’s getting close to the total for all of 2016, when 58 mothers tested positive. If the current rate continues, 106 babies will be born this year at Reid Health to addicted mothers. Those newborns often suffer a variety of health problems and face extended hospital stays, usually at public expense.
