Carrie Underwood Shares Childhood Story

Carrie Underwood shares a moment from her teen years when her dad turned a bad day into a really good one. She's among a number of A-List women to be featured in Peoples Beautiful issue, sharing some of the most beautiful things that have ever been said to them.

For the her, one of the sweetest compliments she’s ever received came from her dad during an awkward stage of her youth. She’d had a difficult day in school because of a boy in her class who had made fun of her makeup.

“Hey, I was just 14...I was still learning how to do it,” Carrie says, thinking back on that moment. But things took a turn for the better when her family sat down to dinner that evening, she recounts.

“...For no reason at all, my dad told me that I looked really pretty. He had no clue about what had happened that day, nor is he exactly the kind of guy to give out compliments like that freely,” she explains. “But those words turned a bad day into a really good one.”

Garth's Hesitation to Perform during The Big Game in 1993

30 years ago in 1993, Garth Brooks performed the National Anthem at the Super Bowl, but it almost didn’t happen. Garth wanted to debut his video for 'We Shall Be Free' during the broadcast. The song was written in response to the LA riots following the Rodney King verdict in 1992.  The network decided that the video was too controversial, so Garth left the stadium just 45 minutes before kickoff.  In addition, Garth denied the network's request to pre-record his performance of the anthem. According to the book "The Making of the Super Bowl: The Inside Story of the World's Greatest Sporting Event" Garth ended up winning the argument and performed the anthem, but America's biggest sports event was delayed for the first time in its history to show his video. Since this incident, the NFL has now made it a requirement that all Super Bowl performances of the anthem are pre-recorded.
