(Richmond, IN)--A single mother and her four children escaped a house fire in the first block of South 16th in Richmond late Wednesday night. They were awakened by another mother and her two children, who had just returned to the home the eight people shared. "It's lucky the one family came home as early as they did to wake up the other family and get them out," said Battalion Chief Jeff Glenn. The fire quickly took over the second floor and attic as numerous firefighters battled the blaze. "There was a partition wall that was built up to hide the utilities. When it caught on fire, it went up the chase inside the walls," Glenn added. Investigators will return Thursday to look into the cause of the fire. Damage was set at $55,000. Firefighters cleared the scene at around 2:30 Thursday morning.
