SNOW-COVERED ICE BRINGS TRAVEL TROUBLE

(Whitewater Valley)--Road crews were out Monday morning all over the Whitewater Valley dealing with a couple of inches of snow that left travel hazardous.  Mike Sharp with the Wayne County Highway Department says the problem was not so much the snow, it was what was underneath.  "The ice underneath is pretty bad because of the wetness we had before the snow came on top of it," Sharp said.  Numerous slide-offs and accidents occurred late Sunday afternoon and Sunday night as rain changed over to snow.  Eastbound I-70 was blocked at 8:30 p.m.  It was one of at least six crashes on 70 just in Wayne County.  More than two dozen crashes occurred elsewhere, including overturned cars on Centerville Road and on State Road 1 near Milton.  A utility pole fell across U.S. 35 after a crash near Economy.  No life-threatening injuries were reported in any of those accidents.  By 7 a.m. Monday, there had been only a couple of inconsequential slide-offs on I-70 in Wayne County.
