COUNTY TAKING CLOSER LOOK AT NEEDLE EXCHANGE REQUIREMENTS

(Richmond, IN)--Wayne County Commissioners indicated Wednesday that they are looking closer at requirements to initiate a needle exchange program.  That’s after a public health emergency was declared last week based on Wayne County’s rate of hepatitis C.  Wayne’s County’s rate is fourth-highest in Indiana.  The cost of the program could be as high as $80,000.  But, the cost of treating just one uninsured drug addict with hepatitis C can be as high as $100,000, and that cost could ultimately fall on the taxpayer.
