REMAINS OF UNION COUNTY SOLDIER TO BE RETURNED 66 YEARS AFTER HIS DEATH

(Union County, IN)--One Whitewater Valley family has received a Christmas gift that’s 66 years in the making.  Gerald Shepler of Union County fought in the Korean War and went missing in 1950 following an ambush.  He was declared dead later that year when his body could not be located.  Decades passed with no answers.  Then, in the early 90’s the Korean government returned 208 boxes with the unidentified remains of soldiers.  A family member recently went through DNA testing.  And now, just this month, that DNA testing positively identified some remains as those of Gerald Shepler.  The family is now awaiting the return of those remains to Union County for burial.
