COUNTY COUNCIL PASSES 2018 BUDGET; EXPRESSES CONCERN ABOUT HEALTH DEPARTMENT

(Richmond, IN)--Elected Wayne County officials met Wednesday night and passed the 2018 budget.  That budget is balanced with a cash balance that will remain intact and a two percent pay raise for county employees.  But one element of Wayne County government has caused recent concern.  Some elected officials are now publically questioning certain elements of the operation of the Wayne County Health Department.  "We don't want county tax dollars funding an operation that is in competition with other private-sector businesses," said Wayne County Council member Pete Zaleski in discussing one of the concerns.  Health Department Director Eric Coulter questioned that concern Wednesday, wondering with whom the department would be in competition.  Zaleski is also pushing for greater transparency and compliance with state agencies.   The Health Department serves 12,000 people and is now self-sufficient.
