FIRE DOES HEAVY DAMAGE TO EIGHT-UNIT APARTMENT BUILDING

(Richmond, IN)--An eight-unit apartment building near downtown Richmond was heavily damaged – if not destroyed – by fire Tuesday afternoon.  It broke out at around 4:30 in the 1300 block of East Main.  East Main was shut down in that area as firefighters battled the blaze from inside, outside, and from an aerial truck.  Crews were on the scene for several hours.  One resident claims to have started the fire by falling asleep with a lit cigarette.  There were no injuries.  The Red Cross is helping some of the people who have been displaced by the fire.  While Richmond firefighters were dealing the fire, Richmond police were also at the scene dealing their own issues.  According to scanner traffic, a fight broke out.  Also, a man later identified as 29-year-old Gary Rose Junior was at the scene of the fire and laying down.  When police checked on him, Rose allegedly took a swing at an officer.  He’s charged this morning with felony battery on a police officer.
