(Liberty, IN)--Liberty is in need of major upgrades to buildings and systems. A recent study found deficiencies of facilities at the sheriff’s department, jail, fire department, and 911 center. One of the primary concerns is the jail. The state is mandating upgrades. The current jail is 150 years old and has a listed capacity of ten inmates. But, for the last decade, it has averaged holding more than twice its capacity. A recommendation was presented this week for a new jail that would house 36 inmates. Preliminary cost estimates are around five-and-a-half million dollars.
