OLER, COUNCIL MEMBERS TO BE SWORN IN FRIDAY NIGHT

(Richmond, IN)--A new slate of leaders, including mayor, will be sworn in Friday night at the Richmond City Building.  Mayor-Elect Ron Oler will take the oath at 6 o’clock.  This was Oler shortly after winning the election last month.  "I will be proud to serve Richmond.  I'm ready to get to work.  I can't wait," Oler said.  Also set to be sworn in are council members Doug Goss, Lucinda Wright, Bill Engle, Larry Parker, Anne Taylor, Gary Turner, Jane Bumbalough, Justin Burkhart, and Jerry Purcell.  The event is open to the public.

WAYNE COUNTY CHILD ABUSE NUMBERS DROP SHARPLY

(Wayne County, IN)--It appears that Wayne County is in for some good news with what should be a huge drop in the number of substantiated cases of child abuse and neglect.  Last year, Wayne County had a total of 363 cases.  But this year, according to new numbers from the state, that total should drop by more than a hundred cases.  With only December totals not compiled so far, Wayne County has dropped to 211 cases for 2023.  This year will be the first year that Wayne County has had less than 300 cases of child abuse and neglect since at least 2016.

PREBLE COUNTY CHILD RAPIST SENTENCED

(Eaton, OH)--A Preble County man has been sentenced after sexually abusing two children for years.  54-year-old Carl Bechtol of West Alexandria will spend a minimum of 22 years in prison.  Bechtol recently pled guilty to two counts of raping a child, and that plea has brought about a cancellation of his trial.  Bechtol had originally been arrested in March of last year.

RICHMOND TEACHERS UNION TO PUSH FOR EQUITY POLICY

(Richmond, IN)--The Richmond Education Association, or teachers union, has announced they’ll be holding a community forum on what is becoming an increasingly controversial topic – equity in schools.  While equality typically means equal opportunity, equity generally means equal outcome.  In Oregon, for example, standardized testing was recently dropped in the name of equity and labeled "instruments of racism and a biased system."  Richmond’s upcoming forum is subtitled “Why Richmond Community Schools Needs an Equity Policy.”  It will be held on January 16 at Morrison-Reeves Library and is open to the public.

THURSDAY IS LAST FULL DAY OF SNOW'S MAYORAL TENURE

(Richmond, IN)--After eight years of service to the city, Thursday is the last full day in office for Richmond Mayor Dave Snow.  Ron Oler, who defeated Snow in last month’s general election, will be sworn in Friday night.  Early in his mayoral career, Snow worked to improve collaboration with county-level officials.  One of his earliest challenges was the removal of the old Reid Hospital building.  Then, Snow dealt with the city’s response to Covid-19.  One of Snow’s primary projects was the Loop – a plan to connect downtown with the Depot District.  That plan will continue into Oler’s term.  Snow has not publically announced what he will pursue next.

ABUSIVE MOTHER SENTENCED TO TEN YEARS

(Richmond, IN)--Ten years is the sentence for a Richmond woman whose infant daughter suffered catastrophic abuse.  It was part of a plea deal for 29-year-old Casey Miller, who had originally faced a 40-year sentence.  Nearly three years ago, Miller’s daughter suffered injuries that included a brain bleed and broken bones.  The girl’s father, Matthew Shaffer, was sentenced last summer to 30 years.

RCS TO ISSUE ID CARDS TO ALLOW PARENTS TO TRACK STUDENTS

(Richmond, IN)--Richmond Community Schools is getting set to launch something called Parent Patrol.  Among other things, it will allow parents to track exactly where their child and their child’s bus is at any given time.  RCS Superintendent Dr. Curtis Wright explained how it will work.  "When students return after winter break, we will issue ID cards.  These student ID cards will be worn on a lanyard throughout the school day and scanned as students board and exit the bus.  This will enable us to know if a child is getting off at the wrong stop or boarding the wrong bus."  Those same ID cards will also be used to distribute breakfast and lunches.

MOTION FILED IN MY WAY FEDERAL LAWSUIT

(Richmond, IN)--There are multiple lawsuits surrounding the My Way Trading fire, and now there’s been some movement on one that’s now progressing through a federal court.  Seth Smith and his company, Cornerstone LLC, have filed a motion for summary judgement claiming that the two named plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit, Richmond residents Tushawn Craig and Marquetta Stokes, have not presented evidence that would make Smith liable.  The city of Richmond remains a co-defendant in that class-action suit.  They are suing Smith and Cornerstone.  And, a New Paris family is suing both entities, claiming a resident’s death is the direct result of the fire.

ROUNDABOUT DEATH WAS FROM NATURAL CAUSES

(Darke County, OH)--The driver in what was originally thought to be a fatal Darke County crash that happened last Thursday has been identified, and now there’s an update.  Investigators say 73-year-old Larry Eley of Greenville died at a roundabout at the intersection of highways 121 and 36.  On Tuesday, the coroner’s office has indicated that his death was the result of a medical incident behind the wheel and not because of the auto accident.

STATE FIRE MARSHALS OFFICE EXPECTED AT U.S. 40 FIRE SCENE FRIDAY

(Preble County, OH)--The State Fire Marshal’s Office is expected Friday at the scene of a fire that broke out Thursday on U.S. 40 near the state line.  It broke out in a large garage or storage building at Boots and Hanks, which is a truck parts facility.  Multiple agencies responded to the scene to help provide water and manpower. U.S. 40 was shut down.  No injuries were reported.  Thursday’s fire happened six years – nearly to the day – after a large fire destroyed a building on the same property.

POLICE IMPERSONATOR ARRESTED FOR STRANGULATION

(Wayne County, IN)--A Winchester man who once posed as a police officer and held four teens against their will is back in jail after being arrested in Wayne County Thursday night.  49-year-old Kory Tracy was stopped by state police on U.S. 27 north between Richmond and Fountain City.  Tracy is now charged with strangulation and battery against a public safety official.  Details of what led to Thursday night’s arrest have not been released.  On his Facebook page, Tracy now identifies himself as a Winchester firefighter and EMT.

(Eaton, OH)--Counterfeit bills are continuing to be passed across the Whitewater Valley, and now Eaton police have issued surveillance images of two suspects in the hope they can be identified by the public.  The couple – a male and a female - are suspected of having passed phony bills in Eaton, Lewisburg, and Gratis.

OWNER OF INDUSTRIAL FIRE PROPERTY SUES CITY

(Richmond, IN)--The city of Richmond is facing another lawsuit as a result of the My Way Trading fire.  Owner Seth Smith and his company, Cornerstone Trading, are now suing the city and claim the city denied the company access to the site after the fire.  Smith claims he could not retrieve property at the site and they’re seeking $700,000.  While Smith is the plaintiff in the new lawsuit, he remains a defendant in an existing class-action lawsuit that has been moved to federal court.

COST OF BILLS IN RICHMOND IS 31% BELOW NATIONAL AVERAGE

(Richmond, IN)--The cost of living in Richmond is once again well below the national average.  According to a new report called U.S. Utilities Market Size and Household Spending Report for 2023, the cost of living in Richmond is 18% below the state average and 31% below the national average.  The average Richmond resident is now paying $1400 per month for the ten most common household bills.  And, while that’s low in comparison to other communities, it’s nearly 11% higher than it was last year.

QUICKTRIP RECEIVES VARIANCES FOR PLANNED DEVELOPMENT

(Richmond, IN)--Plans for a large new gas station and convenience store just north of I-70 on U.S. 27 are advancing.  QuickTrip is investing about $9 million and plans to employ up to 40 people at what will be one of the first commercial developments on the north side of 70 at that interchange.  The Board of Zoning Appeals has approved five requested variances involving signage.  Once it’s up and running, customers will have to access the QuickTrip from Highland Road.

VISITATION, SERVICE SET FOR FALLEN PREBLE COUNTY DEPUTY

(Preble County, OH)--Services have now been set for Josh Hamilton, who was the first Preble County Sheriff’s Office employee to die in the line of duty in the county’s history when he was killed in a crash on Monday morning.  Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Friday at The Pentecostal Tabernacle on West Eaton Pike in Richmond.  Yesterday, Sheriff Mike Simpson remembered Deputy Hamilton as a focused deputy.  "Because of his military service and then, after that, what he's doing here.  He was committed to the community."  And, Hamilton was a Preble County native.  "We love people that want to come back to the community, work here, and serve," Simpson added.  The funeral is set for 10 o’clock Saturday morning.

ACCUSED CHILD MOLESTER POSTS BOND HOURS AFTER ARREST

(Richmond, IN)--A Richmond man who was wanted on three counts of child molesting was taken into custody Tuesday night on South 18th Street.  But, 32-year-old Miguel Martinez was behind bars for only a few hours before a $50,000 bond was posted on his behalf and he was released Wednesday morning.  A warrant for Martinez’s arrest was issued last week.  Details of the allegations have not yet become available.

EPA REMOVES 60 TRUCKLOADS OF SCRAP METAL FROM MY WAY SITE

(Richmond, IN)--The EPA has issued another update on cleanup efforts at the site of last April’s My Way Trading fire.  As of Wednesday morning, crews have now washed, removed, and recycled over 60 truckloads of scrap metal that weighed roughly 430 tons.  Crews also removed a large pile of non-hazardous waste that was created as a result of the fire.  That pile amounted to another 645 tons.  Crews will continue working for the rest of this week and then break for the holidays.  They’ll resume cleanup on January 8.

COMMON COUNCIL APPROVES RICHMOND'S FIRST DORA

(Richmond, IN)--Richmond now has its first DORA.  DORA stands for Designated Outdoor Recreation Area, and it allows people to carry alcoholic beverages outside if those drinks are purchased from a business inside the DORA.  Richmond Common Council on Monday night passed the DORA’s establishment by a 6-3 vote.  Richmond’s new DORA encompasses about a five-block area in the heart of the Depot District.  That’s where the Cordial Cork is.  Adam Melton is the owner.  "This allows our guests the freedom to move around the Depot rather than being corralled into a Beer Garden at Events like Oktoberfest. Only utilizing it for certain special events, within the restricted times of Thursday-Friday-Saturday 4pm-10pm, will be a contributing factor in keeping DORA events safe and beneficial to all," Melton said Monday night.  The DORA will be in effect from 4 until 10 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

PREBLE COUNTY DEPUTY KILLED IN CRASH

(Preble County, OH)--Messages of condolence were continuing to pour into the Preble County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday morning following the tragic death of a deputy Monday morning.  34-year-old Deputy Josh Hamilton, who lived in Eldorado, was killed when his marked patrol SUV collided with an oncoming vehicle on State Route 503 near West Alexandria at just past 4 o’clock Monday morning.  The driver of the other vehicle, 36-year-old Michael Gayhart of West Elkton, was also killed.  They were the only occupants of each vehicle.  Hamilton had joined the department in May of last year.  Funeral arrangements are pending.

JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT ANNOUNCES HALL-OF-FAME INDUCTEES

(Richmond, IN)--JA Achievement of Eastern Indiana announced its new inductees into the Business Hall of Fame yesterday.  They include Verne Clingenpeel, who many know as Mr. C., from First Bank Richmond.  Also set to be inducted are Bob, Dan, and Phil Dickman from BSN Sports and Kent and Paula Reineking from Kent’s Harbor on Brookville Lake.  All of them will be formally inducted in a ceremony in March.

GRANT COULD GREAT $100 MILLION INVESTMENT IMPACT

(Richmond, IN)--Earlham College has released more information about the $25 million grant it and the city of Richmond will be receiving.  Earlham will administer the grant. With the $83 million in cost-share funding that has been committed by Earlham’s partners in the effort, the community will realize an impact of more than $100 million in investments.  It will fund multiple elements of the new Revitalize Richmond initiative.  EDC President Valerie Shaffer said that it would typically take decades to secure the level of funding needed for the projects.  Specific details about the projects will be shared in the coming months.

ONE DEAD AFTER MONDAY MORNING CRASH IN PREBLE COUNTY

(Preble County, OH)--One person is dead following a four-vehicle crash on State Route 503 in Preble County on Monday morning.  It happened at around 4 o’clock on 503 south of West Alexandria.  One of the four vehicles that was involved is a Preble County Sheriff’s Department SUV.  One person was pronounced dead at the scene.  There’s no word yet on any other injuries or the identity of the victim.

DEPOT DISTRICT DORA RETURNS TO COUNCIL AGENDA

(Richmond, IN)--Richmond Common Council meets Monday night.  It will be the last council meeting for outgoing Mayor Dave Snow and the last for Ron Oler as a council member before he replaces Snow as mayor in a couple of weeks.  After having been on hold for a few months, Richmond’s Depot DORA ordinance is back on Monday night’s agenda.  It would allow alcoholic beverages to be consumed outside under certain conditions.  Monday night’s meeting begins at 7 o’clock.  As always, you can catch it live on WCTV.

RICHMOND LANDS $25 MILLION GRANT

(Richmond, IN)--Richmond has landed a $25 million grant.  The grant comes from Lilly Endowment and is geared toward not only revitalizing downtown Richmond, but also to connect it with Earlham College.  According to the announcement, which was made Thursday, partial support will restore historic downtown Richmond buildings for both commercial and residential use.  It will also develop pathways to Earlham and make various improvements to the Whitewater Gorge.

RICHMOND'S SENIOR OPPORTUNITY SERVICES TO PERMANENTLY CLOSE

(Richmond, IN)--A business that’s been at the heart of the Old Richmond neighborhood for decades is closing its doors for good.  It’s Senior Opportunities Services.  SOS, as it’s known, has operated a craft shop at Cutter’s Corner in Old Richmond for the last 47 years.  Over 150 area seniors are typically involved in producing various types of artwork, clothing, and furniture.  The organization has also served as a senior employment service.  SOS will remain open for at least a few more months.  Any leftover inventory will be sold at auction.  SOS also operates the Fourth Street Fair.  There’s no word on how that will be affected.

OXFORD-GETTYSBURG RAIL CROSSING TO PERMANENTLY CLOSE

(Preble County, OH)--Preble County officials announced Thursday that part of a heavily traveled road will close for good in a few weeks.  Oxford-Gettysburg Road has been a primary north-south connector of Highways 35 and 122.  Now, the railroad crossing is closing.  The closure is part of an expansion by Norfolk & Southern Railroad that has already brought about the permanent closure of two other nearby roads.  The closure will mean there is no way for vehicle traffic to cross the tracks for a stretch of roughly four miles.  The closure goes into effect on January 8.

RCS ADDRESSES NEED FOR MILLIONS IN RENOVATIONS, CAPITAL PROJECTS

(Richmond, IN)--The Richmond Community School Board on Wednesday night discussed millions of dollars’ worth of capital improvement projects and renovations.  Three buildings, including Test and Dennis, are all now more than a hundred years old.  The largest single project that was identified Wednesday night was HVAC work at Dennis that carries and estimated $3.5 million price tag.  A million dollars is needed at RHS.  This is from Wednesday night:  "At RHS, the library and art room...it needs a new roof.  Every time it rains, we have trash cans in the hallways.".  At the end of next month, the Board is scheduled to discuss potential projects and maximum borrowing amounts.

MAN CHARGED IN DEADLY NEW PARIS PIKE FIRE PLEADS INSANITY

(Preble County, OH)--A man charged in connection with a deadly fire on New Paris Pike has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.  The defense team for 24-year-old Anthony Luker Junior has entered that plea.  That’s has forced the postponement of Luker’s trial, which was supposed to have begun this coming Monday.  Back in September, Luker allegedly set fire to a mobile home between New Paris and the state line.  Kenneth Doolin died in that fire.

RCS BOARD APPROVES McDERMOTT SETTLEMENT

(Richmond, IN)--With a unanimous vote Wednesday night, the Richmond Community School Board approved a settlement agreement and general release for former REA President Kelley McDermott.  Recently, McDermott, the REA, and the school met and resolved all legal claims regarding McDermott’s contract cancellation and the Unfair Labor Practice Complaint that was filed in August.  There was no discussion about the agreement Wednesday night and terms were not disclosed.

RCS REACHES SETTLEMENT WITH FORMER REA PRESIDENT McDERMOTT

(Richmond, IN)--The Richmond Community School Board meets Wednesday afternoon.  The Board is expected to formally enter into a settlement agreement and general release with REA President Kelley McDermott.  It comes after McDermott, the REA, and the school met and resolved all legal claims regarding McDermott’s contract cancellation and the Unfair Labor Practice Complaint that was filed in August.  McDermott’s removal had been an ongoing source of contention between the REA and RCS for months.  Terms of the agreement have not been released.

ERRONEOUS TEXT LEADS TO DISCOVERY OF 14 POUNDS OF MARIJUANA

(Richmond, IN)--14 pounds of marijuana, a handgun, and more than $7000 worth of THC wax have been seized all because of a text message sent to a wrong number.  On Sunday, a Richmond Police officer received a text that was intended for someone else because it included videos and prices of marijuana for sale.  That text led to a search warrant being executed in the 600 block of South E Street.  Logan Jarret of Richmond was taken into custody and now faces dealing charges.

WOMAN JAILED FOR STABBING LESS THAN 24 HOURS AFTER BEING RELEASED FROM JAIL

(Richmond, IN)--A Richmond woman was out of jail less than 24 hours before being sent back on a brand new felony charge on Tuesday.  Deputies were sent to Sunset Drive in Spring Grove on a stabbing report.  The victim had a superficial cut on his neck.  Deputies then began to search for the suspect, 25-year-old Mikayla Watson.  Watson was located walking in the area of the East Main Street Wendy’s.  She is now charged with aggravated battery.

HUNDREDS TURN OUT TO REMEMBER VAN PELT

(Richmond, IN)--Hundreds of people from near and far stopped by the Richmond Community of Faith Monday night to pay their respects to Bob Van Pelt, who died earlier this month.  One of them was former Richmond football coach Richard Bryant.  "He's done so much for our community over the years.  It's really nice to see such a great turnout for him and see all the people that appreciate him," Bryant said.  Van Pelt left a huge impact on Richmond sports, and no one knows that better than long-time Red Devil supporter Jack Bledsoe.  "He was instrumental in getting programs going and helping those young men achieve what they achieved.  It was volunteer time.  He was never on a coaching staff," Bledsoe said.  Van Pelt is survived by his wife, three children, and 11 grandchildren.

NO SOURCE LOCATED FOR LOUD BOOM

(Richmond, IN)--Wayne County officials said Tuesday morning that the source of a loud boom that was heard across much of the city Monday night could not be located.  Most of the witnesses who heard it at around 9 o’clock last night were south of Main Street.  Some saw a flash.  RP&L did not report any power outages associated with the boom.

KICKS 96, 101.7 THE P0INT, AND 95.3 THE LEGEND TO HOST PACK THE PANTRY EVENT

(Richmond, IN)--Kicks 96, 101.7 The Point, and 95.3 The Legend have announced plans to get food to Whitewater Valley families in need.  It’s called Pack the Pantry, and it takes place this coming Friday at Richmond’s Walmart.  The Community Food Pantry has indicated that they are feeding more than three times as many families this year as they did last year.  Residents can drop off non-perishable food items outside Walmart from 10 until 2 on Friday.

SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT RESPONDS TO THREAT

(New Madison, OH)--A threat that was sent to some Whitewater Valley schools along with others across the region is currently being investigated by the FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force.  The threat came in the form of an email from an account claiming to be a Russian terrorist.  One of the schools that received the threat was Tri Village.  On Sunday night, Tri Village's superintendent sent a messsage to parents indicating that he and the school's resource officer had conducted a walk-through at the school out of an abundance of caution.  All Darke County schools operated normally on Monday.  The sheriff’s office said there is no evidence supporting the threats and there is no imminent danger.

NO ARRESTS MADE IN CONNECTION WITH SATURDAY SHOOTING

(Richmond, IN)--There was no indication by Monday morning that any arrests had been made in connection with a shooting that happened Saturday at an Uptown Richmond laundry.  What started as a verbal argument escalated and 56-year-old Leslie Blume was shot in the abdomen.  53-year-old Raymond Blume was struck in the head with an object.  Both were taken to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.  There was no update on their condition Monday morning.  Investigators spoke with witnesses at the scene and would still like to speak to anyone who has additional information.

IDENTIFICATION MADE IN FATAL FRANKLIN COUNTY CRASH

(Franklin County, IN)--Over the weekend, Franklin County officials released the identity of the victim in the fatal crash that Kicks 96 and 101.7 The Point News reported on Friday morning.  It happened on State Road 1 about halfway between Blooming Grove and Brookville.  46-year-old Alisa Kendrick of Brookville drifted off the roadway and struck a guardrail.  She was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene.  Investigators do not know what caused Kendrick to leave the roadway.

THURSDAY NIGHT SHOTS FIRED IN TWO RICHMOND LOCATIONS

(Richmond, IN)--More shots were fired in two different locations in Richmond Thursday night.  In one of the incidents, police were called to the 300 block of Lincoln Street.  There were no reports of any injury, but police were able to make an arrest.  23-year-old Atlanta Millsaps, who lives in Richmond but not at that address, was charged with criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.  As she was being arrested, a search warrant was executed at the house.  On Wednesday, medics were sent to the same block on the report of a drug overdose.  The other shots fired incident happened on South 6th.  Officials say there was no immediate indication that the two incidents are connected.  On South 6th, the sound of gunshots was captured on a nearby resident’s door camera.  No injuries were initially reported and there is no indication that any arrests were made.

COUNTY COUNCIL APPROVES $2 MILLION IN EDIT FUNDING FOR ELDER-BEERMAN CONVERSION

(Richmond, IN)--This week, the Wayne County Council voted unanimously to approve a two-million-dollar contribution from the Consolidated EDIT Fund to advance the goal of converting the former Elder-Beerman building in downtown Richmond into 150 new apartments.  The issue next goes before the Wayne County Commissioners for the county’s last step in the approval process.  And, a point of clarification regarding a story Kicks 96 and 101.7 The Point ran earlier this week…in previewing the council meeting this week, we also mentioned two other historical buildings in downtown Richmond in such a way that the listener or reader could have thought the EDIT funds were aimed at them and not Elder-Beerman.  Those two buildings are not part of the issue that’s now headed to commissioners.

MULTIPLE NETTLE CREEK STUDENTS ENGAGE IN CRIMINAL ACTIVITY

(Hagerstown, IN)--Nettle Creek Superintendent Emily Schaeffer issued a statement to parents Thursday afternoon.  It said, in part, that multiple students were engaged in criminal activity at a site away from school campuses.  The statement went on to say that Hagerstown Police and school administrators handled the situation immediately.  The statement did not disclose the specific nature of the crimes or indicate how many students were involved.  Schaeffer said that Nettle Creek Schools are not experiencing any threat.

WAYNE COUNTY OVERDOSE DEATHS IN SHARP DECLINE

(Wayne County, IN)--So far this calendar year, Wayne County has had 39 confirmed drug overdose deaths.  And, while that’s a lot, it is down substantially from recent years.  There were 48 overdose deaths in the county last year, and 65 the year before.  County officials are largely crediting easier access to free Narcan as the reason for the reduction in deaths.  Free Narcan is now available in at least ten Richmond locations, including at fire stations, the Health Department, and the Wayne County Jail.

CONVENIENCE STORE PROPOSED FOR I-70/US 27 JUNCTION

(Richmond, IN)--One area off of I-70 that is likely to see lots more commercial development in the next decade is on U.S. 27 just north of I-70, and that includes plans for a large new gas station and convenience store.  A company called QuickTrip is working to buy 11 acres of land just north of the I-70 interchange on the west side of 27.  When complete, it would be the fourth gas and convenience store at the interchange, but the only one north of the interstate.  The company wants to install a 100-foot-tall sign that would display gas prices.  They’ll go before the Board of Zoning Appeals next week.

THURSDAY PROCESSION SET FOR POLICE CANINE

(Connersville, IN)--A final ride is scheduled to take place Thursday morning through Connersville for Police Canine Leo, who died this week.  Leo had served Connersville and Fayette County for nine years.  The ride begins at 11:30 Thursday morning at the Connersville Veterinary Clinic, will head east on 30th Street, and end at Hanson Meadows.  There will also be a pause for a final call in front of the Connersville Police Department.

RPD SEEKS MAN FOR QUESTIONING

(Richmond, IN)--On Tuesday, the Richmond Police Department released a clear image of a person they’d like to identify and speak to as part of an ongoing investigation.  The image shows an athletically built black male with a thin mustache who is leaning against a cooler at a convenience store or gas station.  He appears to be in his 20’s or 30’s.  RPD did not specify which investigation to which the man may be connected.  The most high-profile investigation in the last few weeks surrounds the shooting death of 20-year-old Jaziah Scudiero on South 14th in Richmond ten days ago.  No arrests have been made in that case.  If you can provide the man's identity, you're asked to call the Richmond Police Department at 765-983-7247.

PUBLIC VISITATION SET FOR BOB VAN PELT

(Richmond, IN)--A public visitation has been set for Bob Van Pelt.  The community leader, businessman, volunteer, and Indiana Football Hall of Fame member died Sunday.  The visitation is set for 3-6 o’clock this coming Monday at Richmond Community of Faith, which many may know as the former Cox’s Supermarket just off Garwood Road.

EATON COUNCIL SELECTS NEW MAYOR

(Eaton, OH)--Eaton has a new mayor.  During its Monday meeting, members of the Eaton City Council elected Matt Venable as the new mayor.  Jim Ball and David Kirsch were also sworn in this week to begin their new terms after having been successful in last month’s general election.  Recently, council also honored outgoing Mayor Joe Renner, who had served Eaton in various capacities for nearly 20 years.

MAN WANTED FOR BATTERY ARRESTED AT REID HEALTH

(Richmond, IN)--A man who was wanted in Fayette County for felony battery was taken into custody in Wayne County Monday.  But, it’s not first time 30-year-old Derek Carter has faced a violent criminal charge.  Back in 2019, Carter was accused of breaking the arm of a two-year-old and blackening the eyes of a six-year-old.  Carter was taken into custody Monday at Reid Health.

PUBLIC COMMENT TAKEN ON EFFECTS OF I-70 WIDENING

(Wayne County, IN)--Plans to widen I-70 to three lanes through nearly all of Wayne County are progressing.  The Indiana Department of Environmental Management is taking public comment now through the end of the month regarding any impacts to water quality.  INDOT says the work could impact nearly a mile of streams and almost four acres of wetlands.  The beginning of actual construction on the project is still almost a year away.

BOB VAN PELT DEAD AT 78

(Richmond, IN)--A long-time Richmond business and community leader who was also one of the greatest athletes in the city’s history has died.  Bob Van Pelt died Sunday morning.  He had entered hospice care after being in failing health in recent years.  Van Pelt was the owner of Rax Restaurants in Richmond, Connersville, and New Castle.  Before that, he had played in the NFL with teams that included the Philadelphia Eagles, Cincinnati Bengals, and Detroit Lions.  Van Pelt was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 2012.  Services are pending.  Bob Van Pelt was 78.

STEEL REMOVAL PROGRESSES AT MY WAY TRADING FIRE SITE

(Richmond, IN)--Over the weekend, the EPA issued an update on cleanup at the My Way Trading Fire site in Richmond.  The EPA said that, since the end of October, they have washed and removed 441,000 pounds of steel from the site and sent it for recycling at a Richmond facility.  The washing of the steel helps to reduce the spread of asbestos and other materials.  It will take the rest of this month to remove the steel.  Then, crews will focus on removing other materials.

SMOKE FORCES EVACUATION OF CIVIC THEATER

(Richmond, IN)--An electrical issued forced the evacuation of the Richmond Civic Theater Sunday during a rehearsal for an upcoming performance.  Here’s Battalion Chief Charlie Bartlett talking about what prompted the evacuation:  "It was just light smoke."  Now, work will get underway to repair the issue.  "They do have some electrical problems going on in one of their breaker boxes.  They're going to get an electrician to check it out (Monday)," Bartlett said.  Actors had evacuated Sunday before fire crews arrived.

SHOTS FIRED IN RICHMOND FOR THIRD TIME IN SIX MORNINGS

(Richmond, IN)--More shots were fired in Richmond early Friday morning.  For the third time in the last six mornings, officers responded and found evidence of shots that included shell casings.  According to scanner traffic, police were sent to the area of North 19th and 21st Streets at around 2 o’clock Friday morning.  No injuries were reported.  In addition to the locating the casings, one resident indicated that a bullet hole had been discovered in a wall.  There was no description of any shooter or vehicle.  A 20-year-old Richmond man was shot and killed last Sunday morning.  Investigators are still working to identify and locate that shooter.

U.S. 40 BRIDGE REOPENS

(Centerville, IN)--There was no ribbon-cutting or fanfare, but a detour that has been a thorn in the side of Wayne County drivers for months is now in the rearview mirror.  The U.S. 40 bridge over Nolands Fork Creek just west of Centerville has reopened.  The old bridge closed in early June for complete replacement.  Throughout the spring, summer, and fall, U.S. 40 traffic was detoured onto county roads south of the highway.  The project finished more than a month ahead of its original schedule.

SEX OFFENDER JAILED FOR FAILING TO REGISTER FOR FOURTH TIME

(Richmond, IN)--A Centerville man who has been labeled by the state as a sexually violent predator was back behind bars Friday morning.  Back in 2008, Gregory Carlin, who is now 54, was sentenced prison for criminal confinement of a victim under the age of 18.  Upon release, Carlin was supposed to make regular registration with the state as a sex offender.  But Carlin failed to do that in 2011, twice in 2021, and now again for the fourth time.  Carlin lists a Meek Road address in Centerville but was taken into custody on Kinsey Street in Richmond Thursday.
